The Keeper is the unbelievable true story of Bert Trautmann (David Kross), a German soldier and prisoner of war who overcame extreme prejudice to become an English football icon. More than a talented player on the pitch; he became an essential bridge in the German-British relationship in a tumultuous post-war environment.
After the war came to an end, Trautmann’s obvious skill gave him the opportunity to stay in England and play for the local team in Lancashire, where he fell in love with the club owner’s daughter and created a new life in a hostile and unwelcoming country. After being recruited by Manchester City, English fans erupted in protest over a German representing their country in the highest level of football. Between his stellar play and the support of Rabbi Alexander Altmann, Trautmann became a star, culminating with the 1956 FA Cup Finals where he led his team to victory despite suffering a broken neck mid-game. In 2004, he received a prestigious Order of the British Empire for his contributions to Anglo-German relations.
The Keeper creates a layered portrayal of a man battling his past while attempting to create a new life. A complex and layered portrayal of forgiveness, redemption, and finding acceptance within ourselves.
